History of Ljubljana Joze Pučnik Airport

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, which was opened in December 1933, has been in service since and has replaced Polje Airport, the first civil airport of Slovenia.

On June 27, 1991, two days after Slovenia gained its independence from Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav People’s Army began its military operations in the country. During these operations, the airport became unusable after the attacks. Clashes around the airport continued until the Treaty of Brioni, signed on July 7. After the treaty, the airport was made operational in a short time and started to serve again.

On December 8, 2004, the airport managed to break its own record by hosting one million passengers in a year for the first time. In 2007, the name of Jože Pučnik, a Slovenian dissident, politician, and leader of the Slovenian Democratic Opposition (DEMOS) between 1989 and 1992, was added to the airport, and it became known as Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport.

In December 2007, expansion works were started in the terminal building to enable Slovenia to enter the Schengen Area, and the Terminal building (T1) was expanded by 4.000 m2 (43.000 ft2).

In 2014, the Slovenian government started the privatization process of the airport. Fraport, which was awarded the tender, acquired a 75,5% stake in the airport. The remaining shares were purchased in the following months, and Fraport took 100% ownership of the airport.
