Pearson Airport history
In 1937, the Government of Canada agreed to support the construction of two airports in the Toronto area. One of the selected sites was on the Toronto Islands, where today’s Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is located. The other site was northwest of Toronto, near the town of Malton, then Toronto Township (later renamed Mississauga to avoid confusion with the nearby city of Toronto), and was originally intended to serve as an alternative to the downtown airport, but would instead become its successor. The first scheduled passenger flight at Malton Airport was a Trans-Canada Air Lines DC-3, which landed on August 29, 1939.
During World War II, the Royal Canadian Air Force established a base at the airport as a component of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. RCAF Malton Station was home to several training schools and was operational between 1940 and 1946.
In 1958, the Toronto municipal government sold Malton Airport to the Government of Canada and the facility was subsequently renamed Toronto International Airport under the management of Transport Canada. The airport was officially renamed Lester B. Pearson International Airport in 1984 in honor of Toronto-born Lester B. Pearson, Canada’s 14th prime minister and winner of the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) assumed management, operation and control of the airport in 1996 and has used the name Toronto Pearson International Airport for the facility since the transition.
