Gibraltar Private Jet Charter

Gibraltar International Airport is the civil airport serving Gibraltar, known as the British overseas territory. The runway belongs to the Ministry of Defense to be used by the Royal Air Force as RAF Gibraltar. National Air Traffic Services has a contract to provide air navigation services at the airport.

In 2017, the airport carried 571.184 passengers and 302.094 kg of cargo on a total of 4.888 flights. The only international aerodrome in the region, Gibraltar Airport is exposed to strong cross winds along the Gulf of Gibraltar, so landings take place under difficult conditions in winter.

As of 2021, EasyJet is the largest airline operator in Gibraltar. In addition, the airport serves British Airways, Eastern Airways and Wizz Air UK.

Although the port is located in Gibraltar, the aerodrome is also used by people traveling to or from neighboring parts of southern Spain, such as Costa del Sol or Campo de Gibraltar. Private jet charter services that desire to provide transportation to these regions due to its location frequently use Gibraltar Airport.

History of Gibraltar, separating Europe and Africa

While Gibraltar was an important naval base for the British, the airport was built on a racetrack in the region during World War II. The airport was opened in 1939 and was intended only for the Royal Navy’s use in an emergency. However, the runway was later expanded by reclaiming some land from the Gulf of Gibraltar using the rocks blasted from the Gibraltar Rock during the works in military tunnels. This last major extension of the runway has allowed larger planes to land in Gibraltar.

The runways, which were used for emergency throughout the war, began to be used for civil aviation on November 3, 2003, when Monarch announced a new route from Gibraltar to Manchester Airport.

In late 2005 and early 2006, the implementation of a new agreement was one of the main topics of the Gibraltar Tripartite Forum between the Governments of Gibraltar, Spain and the United Kingdom. As a result, the Córdoba Agreement was signed by all parties on September 18, 2006. This ended all discriminatory restrictions on civil flights to Gibraltar International, including banning flights over Spanish territory and excluding Gibraltar from all EU treaties on air transport and allowing civil flights from all nations to Gibraltar International.

After this agreement, many airline companies started to operate flights to Gibraltar Airport. Following the service of different airlines in the region, the fact that the landings in Gibraltar being dangerous, especially in the winter months, emerged and on September 4, 2015, overnight works were started for the re-coating of the runway and the works were completed in January 2016.

The aerodrome is located on the isthmus that connects Gibraltar to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula. Whether the territory of the aerodrome has been transferred by the Treaty of Utrecht is still under discussion by Spain and England.
