Brief history of Ercan Airport from World War II to the present

Ercan Airport was first built as a military airport by the British during World War II. After the liberation of Cyprus by the Turkish Armed Forces, it started to be used as the main civil airport of Northern Cyprus.

For flights from abroad to Ercan Airport or from Ercan Airport to abroad, it is obligatory to land at a point in Turkey. In 2006, the Turkish government began negotiations so that Famagusta, the main port of Northern Cyprus, and Ercan, the main civil airport, could be operated for direct flights. Although these initiatives are welcomed by the world public opinion, they still have not been able to reach a solution today.

Recently, plans for the privatization of Ercan Airport have emerged and plans to enlarge the airport have begun to increase capacity. Ercan Airport currently has a runway of 2,75 kilometers and an apron with a capacity of seven aircraft. The runway is long enough for large aircraft to land, but not long enough for takeoffs. The plan was the construction of a new 3.200m runway and the extension of the existing runway to 3.200m, more than doubling the existing aircraft capacity with the apron, terminal building and the planned new apron. As of 2021, the new terminal is currently under construction. As a result of the works, the airport will be much larger than the current one and will have 9 boarding bridges.
