The history of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport dates back to Merle Fogg Field, which opened on May 1, 1929, the airport was named after local aviation pioneer Merle Fogg. The airport was predominantly used by general aviation until 1942.
On June 3, 1942, the US Navy began construction of a Naval Air Station on the site of Merle Fogg Field. The airport was renamed Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station. The first flight took place on October 7 of the same year. The US Navy decommissioned the base on June 1, 1946.
On January 1, 1948, the US Navy decided to transfer control of the airport to Broward County. The civilian airport was named Broward County International Airport. The first scheduled international flight took place on June 2, 1953, with a Mackey Airlines flight to Nassau. On October 4, 1956, the US Navy transferred ownership of the airport to Broward County. The first scheduled flight within the United States, a Northeast Airlines flight to New York, took place on December 13, 1958. On March 1, 1959, a new passenger terminal opened and on October 1 of the same year the airport was renamed Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
In 1969, the airport recorded more than one million passengers in one year for the first time. By 1983, the number of passengers had increased significantly, so the airport began renovation and expansion of its passenger terminals that year. Also in the same year, a Concorde landed in Fort Lauderdale for the first time. The passenger terminals were demolished in the mid-1980s. The first new terminal, Terminal 4, opened in 1985, followed by Terminals 2 and 3 the following year.
In 1994, a new passenger record was reached with more than ten million passengers. In 1999, low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines moved its base to Fort Lauderdale Airport. In 2000 the passenger record was increased to more than 15 million passengers and Hall C of Terminal 1 was opened. Between 2001 and 2003 the passenger terminals were expanded again. In 2003, a major expansion of the airport was planned and Concourse B, an extension of Terminal 1, opened. The following year the airport exceeded 20 million passengers in one year for the first time. In 2007, Broward County approved the expansion of the south runway and the FAA approved the expansion a year later. On January 23, 2012, work began on the extension of south runway 9R/27L, which was previously 1608 meters long and 30 meters wide. The south runway itself was closed on April 17, 2012. As part of the extension, the 13/31 west crosswind runway was permanently closed on May 6, 2013. Only the northern 10L/28R runway remained in operation until the opening of the southern 10R/28L runway on 18 September 2014, which was extended to 2438 meters long and 46 meters wide. The western extension of Terminal 4 opened in November 2015, and by the end of the year more than 25 million passengers had been served for the first time. The expansion of Terminal 1, Concourse A, opened in July 2017.
Due to Hurricane Irma, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport had to close for a few days in September 2017. However, unlike Miami International Airport, it suffered only minor damage. Starting in February 2018, fighter jets of the United States Air Force were stationed in Fort Lauderdale to protect US President Donald Trump during his visits to Mar-a-Lago.
