Serving Florence, the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, Florence Airport (formerly known as Peretola and Amerigo Vespucci Airport) is the second busiest Tuscan airport in terms of passengers, after Pisa International Airport.
The airport is just 4 km outside Florence, on the Arno River and on the outskirts of Mugello. Florence Airport is served by numerous scheduled national, international and low-cost airlines offering seasonal charter flights as well as direct and connecting flights to every destination in the world. Private jet charter services prefer to use this aerodrome more often than Pisa Airport.
The passenger terminal at Florence Toscana Airport consists of two buildings under one roof, one for arrivals and one for departures. The renovation and expansion of the terminal was completed in 2012 and a total area of 6.000 m² was added.

History of Florence Airport from 1910 to the present
The first airfield in Florence was put into service for military purposes in early 1910. The airport, which was used partly for civil aviation until 1920, was discarded due to its proximity to the city and lack of expansion potential. For the new airport to be established, a place on the plain between Florence and Sesto Fiorentino was chosen and Peretola Airport was opened there in the early 1930s.
At first, Peretola was a large area where planes took off and landed with no official direction, but eventually, the Ministry of Aviation decided to expand and upgrade. The airport was expanded towards Castello, and a 60-meter-wide and 1.000-meter-long asphalt runway was built facing northeast in 1938-39.
During the World War II, Peretola was used both by the Royal Italian Air Force and the Luftwaffe, and from 1944 by the Allied air forces. In 1992, the building built by AdF and now reserved for the arrivals was put into service. In 1996, the runway was extended by 250 metres, and AdF financed a further expansion of the take-off area.
Since April 9, 1998, AdF has held a global franchise to manage the airport’s infrastructure, with responsibility for its maintenance and development. On December 5, 2012, Vueling announced the opening of a base of operations in Florence with flights to various destinations in Europe. In late 1999, the renovation and expansion of terminals, aircraft parking areas and other facilities began. In July 2000, AdF entered the stock market. The airport became the first airport in Europe to receive the UNI EN ISO 9001/2000 certificate for the quality of its services in 2001.
