Rovaniemi Airport unknowns and history

The airport was commissioned in 1940 and first served as one of the stations on the “Petsamo Express Route” (Petsamonpikalinja) from Helsinki-Tampere-Vaasa-Kokkola-Oulu-Kemi-Rovaniemi-Sodankylä-Petsamo by Aero O/Y, the predecessor company of today’s Finnair, with Junkers Ju-52s.

During the Continuation War against the Soviet Union in 1941, units of the German Air Force, such as IV/Teaching Squadron 1 with Junkers Ju 87s, were based here. For this purpose, the airfield was considerably expanded, with four runways and several dozen hangars. When the Wehrmacht retreated during the Lapland War, the airfield, like the entire city of Rovaniemi, fell victim to the policy of razing and was completely destroyed.

Reconstruction began in 1948 and the new airport building was inaugurated in 1953. The airport rapidly gained importance due to the reconstruction of the city of Rovaniemi and the relocation of Northern Finland Air Traffic Control from Kemi to Rovaniemi Airport. In 1980, the Finnish Air Force Lapin lennosto (Lapland Air Command) also moved from Tikkakoski to Rovaniemi and a separate military complex was built on the opposite side of the runway from the passenger terminal; the runway was also extended from 2500 metres to 3000 metres. A flight squadron of the Finnish Border Guard is also based here.
