Brief history of Bishkek Manas Airport

The airport, named after the Kyrgyz epic hero Manas, was put into service in October 1974 and made its first scheduled flight to Moscow-Domodedovo on May 4, 1975. The airport remained under the control of the Soviet Union until 1991, with the declaration of independence of Kyrgyzstan in the same year, the airport control was left to the Kyrgyz government.

As the Soviet government did not attach the necessary importance to the airport, the Kyrgyz government actually took over a complete wreck. While the planning of airport renovation works was considered, the USA stepped in. The USA and its coalition partners requested permission from the Kyrgyz government to use the airport as a military base for operations in Afghanistan. After negotiations and agreements, Coalition forces arrived at the airport in late December 2001 and saw an unprecedented expansion of facilities. Damaged runways were repaired, aircraft debris around the runway was removed, aircraft hangar buildings were built, and several aircraft maintenance facilities were installed.

The Kyrgyz government carried out a major expansion and renovation of the passenger terminal with the rental fees paid by the US and Coalition forces. The airport terminal was renovated and redesigned in 2007 to take its current form.
