A brief history of Owen Roberts Airport

Wg Cdr. Owen Roberts was a Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Following the war, Roberts retired and later founded Caribbean International Airways (CIA). By 1950, Roberts had started regular flights between Cayman and Tampa, Florida; Kingston, Jamaica; and British Honduras (now Belize). In the early 1950s, Caribbean International Airlines operated weekly seaplane service between Grand Cayman and both Tampa and Kingston with Consolidated PBY Catalina amphibious aircraft, as the airstrip at Grand Cayman was not yet completed. Roberts lobbied Cayman Islands Commissioners Ivor Smith and Andrew Gerrard to build airports in all three Cayman Islands. In 1952, construction began on an official airstrip at an estimated cost of £93,000 to build airports in all three Cayman Islands, with a 1,524 meter runway with a terminal being built on Grand Cayman at a cost of £100,000. Owen Roberts had purchased two used Lockheed Lodestar twin-propeller passenger planes to keep up with the competition attracted by the soon-to-be-completed airport in George Town.

The first flight of CIA, Ltd. from Kingston, Jamaica to Grand Cayman was set for April 10, 1953. Tragically, however, the Lodestar Roberts was flying crashed during takeoff from Palisadoes Airport. Thirteen people lost their lives, including 40-year-old Roberts. The only survivor was Roberts’ brother-in-law, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Remington-Hobbs. Roberts is survived by his wife Patricia and two daughters in London. His grandson, Will Roberts, sadly predeceased him. He was killed in a car accident in the East End along with his best friend Spencer Grainger. The Grand Cayman Island Airport was later named in honor of the late Lieutenant Colonel Roberts.

On August 21, 2016, the meteorological station at the airport recorded a temperature of 34.9°C, the highest temperature ever recorded in the Cayman Islands.
