General history of Cagliari Elmas Airport
The first nucleus of Cagliari’s civilian airport was inaugurated in 1937 near the military infrastructure, close to the pier of the seaplane terminal designed by Giorgio Gandini. In the same year, the airport was named after the pilot First Lieutenant Mario Mameli, who fell in the skies over Tembien during the Abyssinian War. In 1937, the Cagliari-Rome line ranked first in Italy in terms of passenger numbers with 9,748 passengers, followed by the Rome-Milano line with 8,958 passengers.
It then took more than twenty years to design a new terminal to serve ‘land’ vehicles: The second terminal, designed by Tullio Ibba and built by Aeronautical Engineers, opened on 26 March 1958. As the years passed and the number of passengers increased, a third air terminal was designed by Giovanni Marras and opened in 1980. However, this air terminal was soon insufficient to handle the airport’s ever-increasing traffic. Therefore, the management company decided to build a new terminal capable of supporting traffic of up to 7 million passengers per year. The project was prepared in the company’s technical department between 1997 and 1999 and the new air terminal was inaugurated in 2004 by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
