L.F. Wade International Airport, formerly Bermuda International Airport, is the only airport serving the British overseas territory of Bermuda in the North Atlantic Ocean. L.F. Wade Airport history
The port was originally built during World War II for use as a joint US Army Air Force (USAAF)/Royal Air Force (RAF) base. After the war the RAF facilities were converted into a Civil Air Terminal operated by the local government. When the pre-war seaplane facility on Darrell’s Island closed in 1948, Bermuda’s air routes were taken over by land-based aircraft operating from the airfield.
In 1970, the site was transferred to the United States Navy, which operated it as the US Naval Air Station, Bermuda until 1995. The US Navy terminated the 99-year lease and transferred the site to the Government of Bermuda. The Government currently operates the airport as part of the Ministry of Tourism and Transport.
The airport was built between 1941 and 1943 by flattening Long Bird Island and several smaller islands and filling the waterways between them and St. David’s Island with reclaimed land. The site originally had three runways, but only the longest one is still in use. The old runway is now a taxiway and parallel taxiway connecting aprons one and two to the active runway. This runway was last used as a runway in 1978. It has an old taxiway parallel to it, which today serves as a dispersal area for visiting aircraft.
On April 16, 2007, the airport was renamed “L.F. Wade International Airport” in honor of L. Frederick Wade, former leader of the ruling party when he was in opposition. On March 16, 2017, the Government of Bermuda signed an agreement with the Canadian Trading Company, granting Skyport a 30-year concession to manage and operate the airport. In December 2020, a new terminal was completed, replacing the previous one.
