Augsburg Airport is located about 7 km northeast of the city center of Augsburg, the third largest city in the German state of Bavaria, near the small town of Mühlhausen (Municipality of Affing) in the Aichach-Friedberg district, near exit 73 Augsburg-Ost off Federal Highway 8. For this reason, the airport is also called Augsburg-Mühlhausen Airport, because a large part of the airport is located on the grounds of Mühlhausen. The airport is used for business private jet flights and general aviation with very little passenger airline traffic.

History of Augsburg Airport
The airport opened in 1968 after its predecessor in the southern suburb of Haunstetten had to be closed due to the construction of the new Augsburg University on the airport campus.
In 1986, Interot Airways started scheduled flight services at Augsburg Airport, initially to Düsseldorf. In the early 1990s, Interot’s route network at Augsburg Airport expanded to include Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Hamburg and Leipzig, thus establishing the airport as an alternative for business travelers wishing to avoid the busy Munich Airport.
In 1995, Augsburg Airport saw the opening of Interot Airways’ international flights, mainly to London City Airport.
After Interot Airways became a member of Team Lufthansa in 1996, the airline (by then renamed Augsburg Airways) reduced its presence at Augsburg Airport in favor of Munich Airport; the last flights were terminated in 2002.
After 2005, passenger traffic was moved to Munich Airport, leaving the Augsburg region without a passenger airport in close proximity. Since then, the airport has been used almost exclusively for general aviation and business aircraft. Passenger flights resumed in 2016 with a once-weekly flight to Salzburg.
