History of Athens Airport

The name of the airport derives from Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, who made significant contributions to the development of Greek aviation and the Greek Air Force in the 1930s. The aerodrome was built to replace the currently closed Athens (Ellinikon) International Airport.

The airport, whose project came to the fore at the beginning of the 70s, was brought into action in 1991, when the government the period initiated an international tender in the form of build-operate-transfer. In 1996, Athens International Airport SA (AIA) was established as a Public-private partnership with a 30-year concession agreement.

The debt crisis experienced by the Greek government between 2009 and 2013 affected Athens Airport very badly and many long-haul airlines completely terminated their services to the airport. After the partial recovery of the crisis in 2014, more than ten new airlines launched new flights to and from Athens. In the same year, Ryanair established a new base at Athens Airport.

2016 was a turning point for Athens International Airport for both domestic and international flights. Annual results showed double-digit growth, with annual growth exceeding twenty million passengers, up 10,7%. In 2018, the airport broke another record by reporting that passenger traffic increased by 11% to reach 24,1 million passengers.
