History of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

Schiphol was opened as a military airbase on September 16, 1916. With the end of the First World War, Schiphol Airport was opened for civilian use and eventually lost its military role altogether. By 1940, Schiphol had four asphalt runways at 45-degree angles. The aerodrome was captured by the German army the same year and its name was changed to Fliegerhorst Schiphol. During the war the Airport was destroyed by bombing, but at the end of the war, it was rebuilt.

Declared as the main airport in 1949

In 1949, a new terminal building was completed and it was decided to make Schiphol the main port of the Netherlands. Due to this expansion, the small town of Rijk was completely demolished.

In 1967, Schiphol expanded further with a new terminal area at its current location. Most of the 1967 terminal is still in use today (Departures 1 and 2) as parts of the original piers (now called C, D and E). The new terminal building replaces the old facilities that were once located on the east side of the airport. The airport’s A-Pier (now C-pier) was modified in 1970 to allow Boeing 747 aeroplanes to use the boarding gates. In 1977, a new pier (D, now called F) was opened, which was dedicated to handling wide-body airplanes. The first train station at the airport was established and started to serve in 1978.

Construction of a new Air Traffic Control tower was completed in 1991 because the existing tower was unable to control all airports as it was further expanded. In these years, the airport has also managed to become one of the most preferred facilities for private jet use. Departures Hall 3 was added to the terminal in 1993, as was another pier, G-pier. A sixth runway was completed in 2003, well beyond the rest of the airport, and the connecting taxiway crossing the A5 motorway was named Polderbaan. A new general aviation terminal, operated as the KLM Jet Centre, opened in 2011 on the east side of the airport. The new terminal building has a floor area of 6.000 m2.

Schiphol Airport TransPort Building is home to the headquarters of Martinair and Transavia, and the facilities include the Dutch office of China Southern Airlines and the Dutch offices of Iran Air. The head office of the airport operator, Schiphol Group, is located on the airport property. There are special areas for private jet charter companies within the airport.
