Houari Boumediene Airport is also known as Algeria Airport or Algeria International Airport. The main international airport serving the country’s capital, Algiers. It is located 16,9 km east-southeast of the city.

The name of the airport comes from the ex-president of Algeria, Houari Boumediene. The area where the aerodrome is located, Dar El Beïda, was formerly known as Maison Blanche (White House). The aerodrome is called Maison Blanche Airport in the literature about the Algerian War of Independence. Algeria Airport has been managed by Société de Gestion des Services and Infrastructures Aéroportuaires (SGSIA), which has 2100 employees, since November 1, 2006, and this company is a publicly traded company.

The history of Algeria Houari Boumediene Airport that started with World War II
The airport was established in 1924 and was named Maison Blanche Airport. During World War II, Maison Blanche Airport was the primary target of the Allied Operation Torch, East Task Force on November 8, 1942, and was captured by United States Army units, British Commandos, and British Infantry Division elements.
Later, the aerodrome passed under the command of the Allies and was used as an important transfer center for cargo, transit aircraft and personnel by the United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command.
The airport was used for military purposes for a while after the war and was opened to civil aviation use in 2006. The first terminal building was opened on July 5, 2006 by President Abdulaziz Bouteflika. In 2007, renovation works were started in Terminal 2 and Terminal 2 was put into service in the same year.
In 2019, it was decided to demolish Terminal 3, which was used for hajj and charter flights, to build a new terminal. On April 29, 2019, Terminal 4 building was put into service for the use of foreign airlines.

Transportation from Algiers to Houari Boumediene Airport
Since 2019 there is a direct train connection between the airport and Algiers. Algeria Houari Boumediene Airport train station is located between the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, a 5-minute walk from Terminal 4. Trains take passengers from the airport to the main railway station in Algiers, known as Gare Agha, in about 20 minutes.
Bus services are run by the public transport company ETUSA. The most used service is the bus line 100 (aéro-ville) from Aéroport d’Alger to Place des Martyrs in the Kasbah, the beautiful castle of the Algerian capital. The bus stops at the main bus station (Gare Routiere du Caroubier) in Algiers and the Tafourah – Grande Poste metro station, among other places in the city centre, along the way. A bus journey takes 45 to 60 minutes.
There are taxi stands outside the airport and the easiest transportation to the city center is provided by these commercial taxis. It is possible to reach the center in about 15 minutes with these taxis. Car rental companies such as Hertz, Alamo (Enterprise Holdings), Budget, National (Enterprise Holdings), Dollar (The Hertz Corporation) also serve at Algeria Houari Boumediene Airport.
Passengers who want to travel by their private vehicles can reach the city center in about 15 minutes via the N11 Highway. The RN 5 Main Road, which is an alternative to this road that follows the coastline and passes through more inland areas, is an ideal route for those who want to travel the country.
