History of Kastamonu Uzunyazi Airport

In 1959, a dirt square was built in Uzunyazi, where the planes of the period could land, and State Airlines started Istanbul-Kastamonu flights. However, the flights were canceled after a short time due to lack of passengers. After remaining idle for a long time, the square was reopened in 1990 with the slogan “An airport for every city”, with a 1,000×30 meter runway and terminal building. In 1994, the runway length was increased to 2,400 meters, but it did not serve passenger planes except for test flights. After reopening for the second time, the airport became idle again and the terminal building and runway were damaged over time.

Temporarily transferred to the Presidency of Defense Industries in 2008, the airport was planned to be opened first for training and military flights and then for civilian flights, but these attempts were fruitless. In 2010, it was decided to reconstruct the airport as the existing runway and terminal were deemed inadequate, and in June 2010, the Special Provincial Administration of Kastamonu started work.

Following meetings between the Ministry of Transportation and the Governorship of Kastamonu in December 2011, the airport was reopened in July 2013 following certain renovation and refurbishment works to be carried out at Kastamonu Uzunyazi Airport. In March, the airport was handed over to the State Airports Authority (DHMI) and work on the fire station building was completed in May. Construction was completed in May 2013 and Kastamonu Uzunyazi Airport was put into service on July 5, 2013.
