History of Vilnius Airport

The aerodrome began operating on August 17, 1932, under the name Wilno-Porubanek. Like many European countries, it served as a military airport during the World War II. After the war, the airport started to serve civil aviation again on July 17, 1944.

Lithuanian Airlines was founded as the Lithuanian flag carrier after independence in 1991 and the Vilnius-based Aeroflot fleet was established. The fleet, which mainly consisted of old model Russian aircraft, was replaced by modern Boeing 737 and Boeing 757 jets over time. Lithuanian Airlines operations were suspended from January 17, 2009 due to increasing financial difficulties.

AirBaltic, which is the national airline of Latvia and partially owned by Scandinavian Airlines, opened a second base in Vilnius in 2004 to complete its Riga operation. Vilnius Airport is the main hub of Grand Cru Airlines and the base of Wizz Air. It was the main hub for Star1 Airlines until the end of its operations in September 2010, and it was the headquarters of Aurela until it lost its flight license. It was the hub of Small Planet Airlines and Aviavilsa until both airlines closed.

The airport was a secondary hub for airBaltic, Estonian Air and Skyways Express until they closed the bases in Vilnius. On June 30, 2013, Air Lituanica started its flights from Vilnius Airport and established its base there serving several European cities. However, by May 22, 2015, the airline also ceased all operations.

The airport was closed for 35 days from July 14, 2017 to August 17, 2017 due to the reconstruction of the runway, where all flights are diverted to Kaunas Airport. Although minor improvements are made today, the airport continues to serve with the renovations made in 2017.
