History of Van Ferit Melen Airport

Van Ferit Melen Airport, named after the Turkish politician and former prime minister Ferit Melen and located in parallel to the shore of Lake Van, Turkey’s largest lake, was put into service in 1943.

With the Council of Ministers resolution dated 24.02.1993 and numbered 93/4138, the airport was designated as the Entry-Exit Border Gate on this date. The port, which was named “Van Airport” from the date of its establishment until 2001, was renamed as Van Ferit Melen Airport according to the resolution of the Council of Ministers dated 20.08.2001.

Opened to international transportation in 2011, the port was established in 2012, and installed the first satellite landing system in Turkey.
