Vagar Private Jet Charter

Vagar Airport is the only airport in the Faroe Islands and is located 1,9 km east of the village of Sørvágur. Due to the status of the Faroe Islands as a self-governing region, the aerodrome is not subject to European Union rules. It is the main operating base of the Faroese national airline Atlantic Airways and also became the base of the low-cost airline for a short time in 2006.

Vagar Airport Ltd. is responsible for the execution of all operational activities at Vagar Airport, the only airport in the Faroe Islands. Since it is the only airport in the region, Vagar Airport is frequently used by private jet charter services for flights to the region.

The special history of Vagar Airport

The aerodrome was built on the island of Vagar during the World War II by the British Royal Engineers. After the war, Vagar airport was abandoned and not used until 1963, when it was reopened as a civilian airport on the initiative of two Sørvágur residents, Hugo Fjørðoy and Lars Larsen. In 1964, a separate airline, Faroe Airways, first operated flights using charter aircraft. From the 70s to the 2000s, many airline companies started to use Vagar Airport regularly.

Until 2002, traveling from the aerodrome to most destinations in the Faroe Islands, including the capital Tórshavn, required a car ferry, but since the opening of Vágatunnilin, a paid road tunnel, travel has been made much easier by providing direct road access to the neighboring island. A new airport terminal with increased passenger capacity was opened on June 17, 2014.

The runway was extended from 1.250 m (4.100 ft) to 1.799 m (5.902 ft) in 2011, allowing more aircraft types to be used and more distant destinations to be introduced. Although the ownership of the airport was transferred to the Faroe government in May 2007, the airport is currently managed by the Danish Transport Authority.
