History of Turin Caselle Airport

After the Second World War, when Turin’s first airport (located in Mirafiori Sud) was destroyed and commercial aviation moved to Aeritalia airport, the Turin authorities decided to build a new airport to serve the city. The new port was officially inaugurated on 30 July 1953 by the then Mayor of Turin, Amedeo Peyron, on the site of a former military airport used during World War II and bombed several times by German forces to prevent Allied aircraft from landing.

In July 1985, an ILS SEL 4000 instrument landing system (ILS) was installed at Turin airport, ensuring safe flight operations and safety at the airport in all weather conditions. The ILS was upgraded to Category IIIB in 1992.

In the years that followed, the airport underwent various renovations, extensions and refurbishments, the best known of which began in 1989 to prepare the airport for the 1990 World Cup and was finally completed in 1994 with the demolition of the old control tower and the commissioning of a new air terminal equipped with boarding gates for aircraft entry and a large multi-storey car park. The terminal was renovated in 2005 with the 20th Winter Olympic Games in 2006 in mind and the airport was expanded to handle more air traffic.

In June 2022, the airport was awarded the Best Airport in Europe in the category up to 5 million passengers. Turin Airport stood out for its significant resilience despite the pandemic, expanding its flight network like never before and thus contributing to the connectivity of the region. Special attention has also been paid to the intensive work on innovation and sustainability.
