Brief history of Tunis-Carthage Airport

The history of the airport goes back to 1920, when the first seaplane base in Tunisia was built on the Tunis Lake for the seaplanes of Compagnie Aéronavale. The airport was officially opened in 1938 and served approximately 5.800 passengers annually on the Paris-Tunis route.

During World War II, the airport was used by the United States Air Force’s Twelfth Air Force as a headquarters and command and control base for the 1943 Italian Operation.

The construction of Tunis-Carthage Airport, which was fully financed by France, started in 1944 and in 1948 the airport became the main center of Tunisair. The airline started operations from Tunis-Carthage Airport to Marseille, Ajaccio, Bastia, Algeria, Rome, Sfax, Djerba and Tripoli. Passenger traffic increased steadily from 1951 when 56.400 passengers were carried, of which 33.400 by Air France. Over the years, the airport has become a convenient stopping point for many other French airlines, including Aigle Azur.

In 1997, the aerodrome terminal was expanded to 57.448 m²; and had an annual passenger capacity of 4,4 million. In 2005, the terminal was expanded by an additional 5.500 m2, thus increasing the capacity of 500.000 more passengers per year. A new terminal for charter flights was opened on September 23, 2006.

How to reach the city center from Tunisi-Carthage Airport?

After reaching Carthage Airport, taxis are the most frequently used vehicle to reach the city center. Providing 24-hour service, taxis are the most preferred vehicles thanks to their economical and fast transportation. Other than taxis, it takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the city center with the bus line 35, which operates between 06:00 and 02:00, and these buses depart every 40 minutes. It is also possible to benefit from car rental services such as Avis, Six and Hertz and Uber at the airport.
