History of Tbilisi Airport from 1952 to the present
The first airport terminal building was built in 1952. Designed by architect V. Beridze in Stalinist architectural style, the building has a symmetrical axis floor plan and a monumental heraldry in the form of a portico. There were passages in a giant order on the two side wings. In 1990, a new terminal building designed in an international style was put into service. In 1981, Tbilisi airport was the 12th largest airport in the Soviet Union with 1.478.000 passengers on central lines on flights connecting Tbilisi to cities in other Soviet republics. In 1998, the number of passengers decreased to 230.000 per year.
Tbilisi International Airport has been operated by TAV since October 2005. The company also operates Batumi Airport in Georgia for 20 years since May 2007. TAV Airports Holding, which owns a 76% stake in Tbilisi airport operator TAV Urban Georgia, made an agreement with the Georgian state-owned United Airports of Georgia for the reconstruction of the unused runway, which is one of the two runways at Tbilisi airport.
The old runway will be rebuilt, expanded and upgraded to accept all types of aircraft, including Boeing 747-8, Airbus A380-800, Antonov An-225 and Antonov An-124, according to ICAO standards and F-code regulations. A new F Code taxiway is also planned. Passenger traffic at the airport tripled between 2009 and 2016, reaching 2,2 million passengers.
