History of Tajikistan Dushanbe Airport
The first airport in the region was established in 1924. Due to the inadequacy of the port serving for small-scale flights, it was necessary to build a new port to serve Stalinabad (former name of Dushanbe). Following the works done, the new port was put into service in November 1929.
After the port established in 1929, Dushanbe Airport, which is still in use in the region today, officially became operational in 1964. On September 7, 1992, minor modernization works were carried out in the port until the first months of the Tajikistan Civil War.
After the civil war that ended in 1997, the plans for the construction of the 3rd terminal building started. The government of the period provided a low-interest €20 million loan from France for the 3rd terminal building. With the support of France, the 3rd terminal building was opened on September 3, 2014. In 2017, some renovation works were carried out especially at the VIP terminals and throughout the port.
