Skopje Alexander the Great Airport, which started service as Petrovec Airport and is commonly known today as Skopje International Airport, is located in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. The airport is located 170 km (110 mi) southwest of Ohrid and is the largest airport in the country.
Operated by TAV Airport Holdings, which has a contract until March 2030, Skopje Airport hosts more than ten European carriers and serves many destinations across the continent. History of Skopje Airport
The first commercial flights from Skopje Airport, built in 1928, started in 1929, when the Yugoslav carrier Aeroput launched a route connecting the city to the capital, Belgrade. In 1933 and 1935, the number of routes was increased, and flights to Bitola and Nis connecting to Zagreb, Athens, Skopje started.
With the World War II, the airport was closed to civil flights, and after the war, the airport was used by JAT Yugoslav Airlines until the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 90s.
In December 2006, the name of the airport was changed to Skopje Alexander the Great Airport. In 2008, the Macedonian Government agreed with the Turkish company Tepe Akfen Ventures (TAV), and the operation of the airport was transferred to TAV. After TAV took over the operation, renovation works were started throughout the airport and in September 2011, the new terminal building, the expansion of the runway, the new administrative building, the cargo building and the new access road with a parking lot were put into service.
In February 2018, Alexander the Great was removed from the name of the airport in order to improve relations with Greece, and Athens – Skopje flights started.

Transportation to Skopje Airport
The journey time between Skopje International Airport and Skopje is approximately 35 minutes and covers a distance of 23 km. Buses operated by WTransporter depart every 30 minutes. In addition, there are shuttles to the city center within the airport. It is also possible to find a taxi service within the airport.
It takes around 16 minutes to reach the city by private car via the A4 highway. Passengers who want to visit the surrounding area can reach the center in approximately 35 minutes by choosing the A2 main road.
