History of Palma de Mallorca Airport from 1920 to the present
The history of Palma de Mallorca dates back to the 1920s, when the airport was used by postal airlines. The port, which was used for postal services until the mid-30s, started to host private jet flights of Aero-Taxi de Mallorca company during the summer months when tourism increased.
In 1935, LAPE (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas) was founded and the first scheduled service started between Palma and Madrid. In 1954, the runway was widened and paved for military aircraft use. The aircraft parking apron and parallel taxiway were built in the same period. In 1958, a VOR and a VHF communication center were put into operation.
An airport expansion plan with 3,96 million USD funding in 1964-67 was formulated with a focus on runway expansion, apron expansion, a new terminal to accommodate five million passengers, runway lighting, communications and navigation assistance. Terminal A was built in 1965. Air navigation services were improved by installing a surveillance radar. In the 1970s, a second runway and aircraft parking area opposite the terminal were completed. Terminal B was also opened during this time.
In 1986, the number of passengers using the port reached around 10 million. As a result of this, the necessity for a new terminal building emerged. Construction began in mid-1993 and was designed by Majorcan architect Pere Nicolau Bover. During the construction in 1995, the number of passengers exceeded 15 million. The new terminal was finally opened in 1997. This building is now the main entrance and exit of the airport and houses the airport’s check-in and baggage claim areas.
In 2003, a new terminal building was built for inter-island flights. In the same year, a general aviation building was built at the airport, which increased the airport’s capacity to serve 20 million passengers per year. A 14.457 square meter AirEuropa maintenance hangar was opened in May 2005. The arrivals hall at the airport was expanded in October 2006 at a cost of 10,52 million USD.
A new Air Quality Control system (APC) was installed at the port in April 2011 as part of the air pollution control and monitoring program.
