Daniel K. Inouye Airport history
The airport opened in March 1927 as John Rodgers Airport in honor of World War I naval officer John Rodgers. Funded by the territorial legislature and the Chamber of Commerce, it was Hawaii’s first fully equipped airport, as previously airplanes had to land on short runways, fields or air piers. From 1939 to 1943, the adjacent Lake Keehi was dredged to allow seaplanes, and the dredged land was moved to the airport to provide more space for conventional aircraft.
John Rodgers Airport was renamed Honolulu International Airport in 1947. Historically, due to its proximity to the Central Pacific Ocean, it was a stopover point for transpacific flights to and from North America. In the 1950s, it was the third busiest airport in the United States in terms of air operations. In 1959, Qantas launched the first jet service to Honolulu as a stopover on its flights between Australia and California.
With the development of long-range aviation, most transpacific flights can now fly through Honolulu. As a result, the airport’s passenger traffic has declined over the years, particularly to Australia, the South Pacific and Southeast Asia.
