History of Newark Liberty International Airport

The airport opened on October 1, 1928 as Newark Metropolitan Airport and was the first airport near New York.

As early as 1935, the airport had the world’s first commercial airplane terminal. Newark was New York’s busiest airport until the opening of New York’s second airport, LaGuardia, in 1939. However, at the beginning of World War II, Newark was closed to passenger traffic and served as a logistics base for the US Army throughout the war.

In 1948, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over the airport; passenger traffic was then quickly resumed. The infrastructure was greatly expanded with new runways and hangars, among other things. There was only one main building until the North Terminal opened in 1953.

In the 1970s, the airport gradually rose to the category of “international airport”. In 1973 Terminals A and B were built and the airport was now called Newark International Airport.

In the 1980s Newark developed even faster. The first Atlantic flights were operated from Newark to London in 1984 (by Virgin Atlantic Airways). This brought more and more traffic to the airport. Later Continental Airlines created a hub for flight connections in Newark. In 1987 the North Terminal was demolished and the new Terminal C opened in 1988. This is the main terminal for United Airlines, formerly Continental Airlines; most of the airline’s flights are operated from here. In 1996, the new International Arrivals Hall opened in Terminal B and AirTrain connections between terminals and parking lots began. In 2001, the airport’s monorail was extended to the Northeast Corridor and renamed AirTrain Newark.

In 2003, Newark was honored as the airport with the farthest non-stop connections, with connections to Hong Kong, Singapore and New Delhi. In 2019, the City of Newark extended its lease with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey until 2075.
