History of Nantes Airport

Nantes airport has its origins in a military airport designed in 1928 on part of the current site. In 1936/7, the Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques de l’Ouest opened an aircraft factory adjacent to the airport, producing first MB.210 bombers, then MS.406 fighters and LeO 45 bombers. After the active use of the harbour, the first 900 m long asphalt runway was laid in 1939.

During World War II, the harbour was briefly used as a Royal Air Force airfield before being captured by German forces. During the war, on 4 July 1943, the harbour was completely destroyed by an air raid. After the war, the airfield was re-commissioned by the French Air Force and the aircraft factory was rebuilt. In 1951 the first commercial operations began, and between 1954 and 1960 a new terminal was built and the runway lengthened to accommodate larger aircraft.

Nantes Atlantique is now the largest airport in the west of France. It is planned to be replaced by the Aéroport du Grand Ouest in the ‘commune’ of Notre-Dame-des-Landes, 30 kilometres north-west of Nantes. The €580 million project was approved in February 2008 and is scheduled to open in 2017. However, after nearly 40 years of debate on the utility and impact of such an airport, the project was officially cancelled on 17 January 2018.
