History of Yangon Airport
The airport was used by the British and American Air Forces, and later by the Japanese Air Force, under the name RAF Mingaladon during World War II. After the World War II, Yangon Airport was built on the former RAF Mingaladon by the Kolkata Metropolitan Airports Authority in 1947.
Once considered the best in Southeast Asia and the main airport serving that region, the airport lost its value after new super hubs such as Singapore Changi Airport, Kuala Lumpur Seapang, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta were built.
Although the airport was modernized in 2003 and 2016, no improvements were made at the port in the following years. The Myanmar government decided to build a new airport instead of developing Yangon Airport.

Transportation from Yangon Airport to the city center
Transportation from Yangon Airport to the city center is often challenging for tourists. It’s only a matter of time before you get lost, as most of the information boards are written in Burmese and there is no order in public transport.
The easiest way to reach the city center is by taxi. Taxis located outside the port do not have fixed prices and must be bargained with. Both of Yangon’s main bus terminals are located very far from the city center and the journey takes about 1,5 hours. There is no clarity in the bus departure times, it may be necessary to wait at the bus stop.
Although there are different car rental companies available in the port, there may be situations such as the absence of a car if you go without a reservation.
