Vnukovo Airport, officially known as Vnukovo Andrei Tupolev International Airport, is located in Vnukovo District, 28 kilometers from Moscow. The aerodrome is one of the four major airports serving Moscow, along with Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky.
In 2019, the airport managed to become one of the 10 busiest airports in Europe, hosting 24,01 million passengers, an increase of 12% compared to the previous year. Vnukovo, one of three airports in Moscow, is located 204 meters above sea level. Therefore, in the event of fog, it has often served as an alternative airport. It is almost the only airport used by private jet charter services in the region, especially in such adverse weather conditions.
The airport has two intersecting runways with a length of 3.500 meters (11.500 ft) and a length of 3.060 meters (10.040 ft). Each runway is 60 meters (200 ft) wide and has a 10 meters (33 ft) wide safety shoulder on either side. The common runway capacity is 60 aircraft movements per hour. Vnukovo Airport is equipped with a VIP lounge, which is used by many political leaders and important people visiting Russia. The President of Russia also uses Vnukovo’s VIP facility.

History of Vnukovo, Moscow’s oldest airport
Vnukovo, whose construction was approved in 1937 and opened in 1941, is Moscow’s oldest airport. It was opened and used for military operations during the World War II; and after the war it became a civilian facility. Vnukovo started to be used for official trips to the country after 1956, and important political figures of the period set foot in this airport for the first time in Russia.
On April 20, 1956, the first passenger flights from Moscow to Alma-Ata and from Moscow to Khabarovsk on April 24, 1961 were also made from Vnukovo Airport. In 1980, Vnukovo was expanded due to the 22nd Summer Olympic Games. Vnukovo Airport became a joint stock company in 1993.
After the opening of Terminal B in 2004, Aeroexpress railway connection was provided to the Kiyevsky Train terminal of Vnukovo in August 2005, and finally the new Terminal A building was put into service in 2010. Vnukovo is Europe’s busiest airport for international flights with larger private planes.

How far is it from Vnukovo to Domodedovo?
The journey from Vnukovo to Domodedovo is 56 km using the E101 highway and takes about 45 minutes. It is also possible to reach Moscow, which is located 30 km southwest of the airport, by using the E101.
It is possible to reach Moscow city center from the airport in 40 minutes by trains called Aeroexpress, which arrive every hour. Within the airport, there are private car rental services, as well as taxis available just outside the airport. It is also possible to reach almost the entire city by buses, and buses depart from outside the airport to the city center every 15 minutes.
