History of Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport, the construction of which began in 1937, became partially operational in June 1937, and the construction was fully completed on June 25, 1938. The port was originally named Ringway Airport. During the World War II, the port played an important role in the production of military aircraft and the training of paratroopers. After the war, the base turned into a civilian airport and gradually expanded to its present size. Manchester was the second busiest airport in England after Heathrow in the 1960s.
With the intercontinental flights that started in 1963, the expansion of the single runway of the port came to the fore. In 1969, the runway was extended to 2.745 meters, allowing aircraft to take off with full load and fly non-stop to Canada. In 1971, the airport broke its own record by transporting more than 2 million passengers in 1 year. In 1975, the Ringway was officially renamed Manchester International Airport.
The aerodrome experienced rapid growth in the 1980s and 1990s. Following these growths, plans were initiated for the modernization of the port. In 1987, expansion plans were accelerated, including the planning of a new terminal for the port, which carried one million passengers in a month for the first time.
As part of the expansion, Terminal A, which currently forms part of Terminal 3, was opened in 1989 by Diana, Princess of Wales. In 1993, Terminal 2 was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh together with the official opening of the Manchester Airport station. A second runway was built from 1997 to 2001.
Construction of a new air traffic control tower was completed in 2013. Launched in 2014 as part of the route expansion plans of the Manchester Metrolink tram line, the Manchester Airport Metrolink route has helped to get from the airport to the city centre.
In 2019, the first phase of the new Terminal 2 extension was completed and Pier 1 opened on April 1, 2019. The second phase of the expansion plan was opened on July 14, 2021.
