Modibo Keita International Airport history
The airport was built in 1974, adjacent to Air Base 101, used by the Mali Air Force. The first terminal building of the harbour, which was initially planned to serve 250 thousand people, was opened in 1975. In 2002, the second terminal building of 1.000 m² was built for the African Cup of Nations football tournament organised in Mali and was put into service before the start of the tournament.
The airport was modernised between 2007 and 2012 in a US$ 181 million project funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a US foreign aid agency. The modernisation included new road access, parking facilities and improvements to the airport area, as well as the construction of a new sewerage and waste treatment system.

Taxis are the easiest way to get from the airport where public transport is not regular. Since there is no taximeter in the taxis serving in front of the airport 24/7, it may be necessary to bargain before the journey. It takes approximately 30 minutes for taxis to reach the city centre.
Apart from taxis, another alternative that can be used for transportation to the centre is to rent a car from the car rental services located in the port.
