History of Las Palmas Airport

In 1919, Frenchman Pierre George Latécoère obtained authorisation from the French and Spanish governments to establish an airline line between Toulouse and Casablanca. This line also included connections to Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona. The airport was inaugurated on 7 April 1930, following King Alfonso XIII’s signature of a royal order announcing that the military air force facilities at Gando Bay would become a civilian airport. During its existence, the airport became the largest gateway to the Canary Islands, as well as the largest in terms of passenger and cargo operations.

In 1946, the old passenger terminal was inaugurated, which took two years to build. In 1948 a runway was built, which was completed and fully asphalted in 1957. In 1963, improvements were made to the airport. These included new parking areas, the extension of the terminal and the provision of a visual approach slope indication system. In 1964 a transfer station was built. In 1966, a new control tower was completed to replace the old control tower built in 1946. In 1970, work began on the existing passenger terminal, which opened in March 1973. During this time a second runway was built and this was completed in 1980.

On 18 February 1988, Binter Canarias announced that the airline’s main base would be established in Gran Canaria. The base was inaugurated on 26 March 1989. In October 1991, the terminal was enlarged with improved facilities to serve more passengers. As of 2011, a programme was launched to expand the airport, extend the terminal and create a new runway. In 2015 this major renovation of Gran Canaria airport was completed. Improvements included increasing the number of baggage belts from 16 to 24, check-in counters from 96 to 132 and gates to 40. The new terminal area is now fully operational and is twice the size of the previous area.

Canary Islands Las Palmas travel guide

Las Palmas is a town on the island of Gran Canaria. It is the capital of the island, the largest city in the entire island region and the largest port in Spain.

The Atlantic Modern Arts Centre, where the works of Latin American, African and European artists are exhibited, the house of Christopher Columbus, who is thought to be the explorer of America, the Gabinete Literario, which attracts attention with its elegant architecture, the Canary Islands Museum, where unique archaeological remains, old photographs and documents, books are exhibited, the Las Palmas Santa Ana Cathedral, which has been standing for 600 years, the Nestor Museum named after Nestor de la Torre, the well-known painter of the Canary Islands, and Maspalomas Beach, which is considered the most beautiful beach of the island, are among the points that can be visited on the island.

Transportation from Las Palmas Airport to the city centre

To get from the airport to any point of the island, there are taxi, bus and car hire services available at the port.

The most important thing for taxis departing from outside the harbour is to take a taxi from the designated taxi ranks. The fares are fixed and invoices are given in the taxis at the stops, but since there is no taximeter in the taxis outside the stops, prices may increase.

Three different bus lines depart from the airport. Bus number 60 connects the airport with the city centre. The journey takes half an hour under normal traffic conditions. Bus number 66 takes approximately 45 minutes from the airport to Maspalomas, where touristic facilities are densely located. Bus line 5 runs between Las Palmas city centre and Maspalomas and stops at the airport.

There are also different car hire companies serving at Gran Canaria Airport.
