History of Zhuliany Airport

The aerodrome was built in 1923 to be used as a military airport by Ukraine’s oldest civil aviation company, Ukrpovitroshlyakh (Ukrainian Air Communication Association). With the outbreak of World War II, the expansion works of the airport were stopped. The airport terminal was only completed in 1949, after the World War II. Until the 1960s, Zhuliany was the only passenger airport serving Kyiv.

In 1959, the larger Boryspil International Airport was built near the city of Boryspil and gradually replaced Zhuliany as the main airport serving Kyiv. Since then, the old “Kyiv” aerodrome has become commonly known as “Zhuliany” and was used only for Soviet domestic flights.

After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, Zhuliany started receiving international flights from nearby countries. On March 27, 2011, Wizz Air, a European low-cost airline, moved all its operations from Boryspil to Zhuliany, brought 24-hour flights to the airport and increased passenger traffic by 15% to 20%.

In 2013, there was a significant increase in airport traffic and the number of passengers increased by 4,2 compared to the previous year. In the same year, Zhuliany Airport quickly became a bigger and more efficient competitor to the country’s leading Boryspil Airport.

On March 22, 2018, Kyiv City Council officially changed the name of International Airport “Kyiv” (Zhulyany) Igor Sikorsky in honor of Igor Sikorsky. However, the airport continued to be generally referred to as Zhuliany.
