History of Kuwait Airport by Kenzo Tange
The airport was first established in 1927 to be a stopover for British planes to reach India. The airport was opened to civil aviation in 1979 and was designed by Kenzo Tange, one of the most important architects of the 20th century.
In the last days of the Gulf War on February 27, 1991, the airport became the scene of a tank war between Iraqi forces and the US Army Special Forces. The aerodrome underwent a major renovation and expansion project from 1999 to 2001, during which the old parking lot was cleared and a terminal expansion was carried out. This included new check-in areas, a new entrance to the airport, a multi-storey car park structure and an aerodrome shopping mall.
In 2011, the Civil Aviation Department announced its intention to expand the Kuwait International Airport to serve more passengers and more aircraft. The General Directorate of Civil Aviation reached an agreement with Foster + Partners for the new terminal building planned to be built.
The foundation of the new terminal building, calculated as 900 million Kuwaiti dinars, was laid on May 9, 2017. On May 22, 2018, Jazeera Airways opened its own private terminal at Kuwait International Airport, which was named as Terminal 5. On August 8, 2018, Terminal 4 was opened to cater to all flights operated by Kuwait Airways, the national airline of Kuwait.
