Brief history of Debrecen Airport
Debrecen Airport dates back to the early 20th century. The first official regular flight carrying mail took place in 1930. Later the airport served sports and military purposes. From 1930 onwards, it had considerable domestic traffic, with flights from Debrecen to Budapest and other major cities in Hungary. During the Second World War it was the base for a Hungarian bomber crew.
Between 1946 and 1968, Debrecen Airport also functioned as an emergency airport for Budapest Airport. After the Second World War, the Soviet air force had control over the airport until 1990. The political transition led to the revitalisation of the airport and international civil traffic was introduced, along with sport aviation.
In May 1991, Soviet troops evacuated the airport and handed it over to the Hungarian government. In 1994 the Municipal Government of Debrecen recognised the need to develop the airport and included it in its development plan. The city acquired the airport and has continued to develop it steadily.
On 18 June 2012, Wizz Air launched its scheduled service between Debrecen and London-Luton, initially with 3 flights per week. In 2015, Wizz Air established a pilot candidate school at the airport under the company Pharma-Flight Kft, which researches and manufactures pharmaceutical products for flight personnel
