Doha Hamad International Airport is the only international airport in the state of Qatar.* The aerodrome, located in the south of the capital, Doha, was established in place of the former main airport of Qatar, Doha International Airport. Half of the area where the airport is located was formed by filling the sea.
Hamad International Airport, formerly known as the New Doha International Airport (NDIA), was originally scheduled to open in 2009, but after a series of costly delays, the aerodrome finally opened with a ceremony on April 30, 2014. National carrier Qatar Airways and all other carriers officially moved to the new airport on May 27, 2014.
The airport was named after the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Since its opening, the airport has also managed to become the most frequently used airport in the region by private jet charter services.

Brief history of Doha Hamad Airport
The groundwork for the airport, which was planned in 2003, was laid in 2005. The airport area (terminal and runway) is located 5 kilometers east of the former Doha International Airport. It spans 2.200 hectares and is initially set to serve airlines that will not use lounge access.
Hamad International Airport has been designed to meet a projected and continuing increase in traffic volume. The airport was initially envisioned to have a passenger capacity of 29 million, which is three times the current volume. Once completed, the airport will be able to handle 50 million passengers a year, although some estimates suggest the aerodrome could handle up to 93 million annually. Especially private jet charter services are expected to use the airport intensively. In line with these estimates, Hamad Airport may become the second largest aerodrome in the region after Dubai. When the airport is fully finished, it will be two-thirds the size of the city of Doha. The aerodrome is designed in the theme of an oasis. Most of the buildings have a water motif with desert plants growing in recycled water and wave style roofs. The airport was built on 22 square kilometers, half of which is on reclaimed land.
During the project phase, the Steering Committee awarded the tender for the development of the airport to Bechtel. The contract included the design of the facilities, construction management and project management. The terminal and passenger halls were designed by the architecture firm HOK. The Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract for Phases I and II was signed by Turkish TAV Construction and Japanese Taisei Corporation.
Hotels in Doha, where to stay? Where to visit?
Doha, which is one of the cities with the highest level of welfare, offers many accommodation opportunities for tourists. West Bay Area is one of the places where tourists choose to stay the most in Doha. The alternative to this area, which is close to many shopping points, is the Corniche area. There are mainly 4- or 5-star hotels in both regions. Those who consider more suitable accommodation may prefer the Souq Waqif Region, where 3-star hotels are located.
Although the city has a tourism oriented towards luxury shopping in general, it also stands out with its museums and historical buildings. The most popular tourist attractions in the region include the Museum of Islamic Art, the Corniche, Imam Mohammed bin Abdulvahap Mosque and the artificial island The Pearl.
