History of Vienna Airport goes back to World War II
Originally built as a military airfield in 1938 and used as Heinkel’s southern military aircraft design and production complex during World War II, it was captured by the British in 1945 and renamed RAF Schwechat. Established in 1954 as Betriebsgesellschaft, the airport was opened to serve as Austria’s main airport. In 1959, it was expanded to 3.000 m2 and there was only one runway at the facilities. From 1959, the assembly of the new airport building began. Another runway was built in 1972, and the airport was connected to the national highway network by 1982. In 1986, the expanded arrivals hall was opened, and in 1988 the Jetbridge and Pier East wing began service.
In 1992, the new Terminal 1 was opened, and a year later, gates B, C and D were put into service. The facility was expanded by establishing shopping areas around the plaza in the transit area. In 2006, the 109-meter-high control tower was put into service with a magnificent opening ceremony. Office Park, which offers 69.000 m2 of leasable area, was established between 2004-2007, VIP and general aviation terminal was opened in 2006. These expansions have led to a significant increase in private aircraft chartering services provided at the facilities.
On June 5, 2012, despite going through many financial difficulties, the new Austrian Star Alliance Terminal (Terminal 3, which was named Skylink at the time of its construction) was opened, enabling the airport to handle 30 million passengers per year.
Places to see in Vienna
The first thing that comes to mind when Vienna is mentioned is the famous Prater Ferris wheel. The entertainment center with the Ferris wheel is one of the largest entertainment centers in Europe, not in Austria. Another touristic place in Vienna is St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which was built in the 12th century. In addition to important structures such as Belvedere Palace and Hofburg Palace in the city, the Albertina museum, which contains more than 65 thousand original drawings, are the must-see spots.
How to reach the city center from Vienna Airport?
The Vienna S-Bahn line S7 is located approximately 25 minutes from the city centre. The more expensive City Airport Train connects the airport directly to the Wien Mitte train station near the city center in 16 minutes. Also, the underground train station has been expanded to accommodate long-distance trains. Since December 2014, trains can arrive directly at the airport thanks to ICE services from Germany, the new main station of Vienna. ÖBB Railjet services, which started in December 2015, also operate at the airport. Intercity trains between the airport and the main station take approximately 25 minutes.
The aerodrome is located right next to the A4 motorway from central Vienna to Budapest. It has its own exit called Flughafen Wien-Schwechat. Bratislava can be reached via the A6 motorway, which leaves the A4 in the east. Taxis and car rental facilities are available at the aerodrome. There are several taxi companies operating at the airport.
In addition, buses to various destinations in Vienna and other cities such as Bratislava, Budapest and Brno depart every 20 minutes from the airport.
