History of Samsun Carsamba Airport
The initial projects to build a new airport in Samsun dates back to the 90s. First of all, a tender was opened for the airport by the General Directorate of Railways, Ports and Airports Construction (DLH) in 1993, but this tender was canceled for an undisclosed reason.
The tender that was repeated in 1994 was won by the consortium in partnership with Alsim Alarko and Akfen Construction. The foundation of the airport was laid by the prime minister of the time, Tansu Çiller, on August 31, 1994. Until 1997, the construction of the port was accelerated with a decision taken while very little was completed throughout the airport. The port was inaugurated on December 15, 1998 as a result of accelerated works.
A-type cargo warehouse and cold storage, the construction of which began in 2007 by the Metro Group of Companies, became operational on September 1, 2009. In the following years, due to the small size of the apron area, expansion works were started and these works were completed in August of 2009 without any problems.
At the beginning of 2010, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation decided to lift the flight restrictions of the airport, and thus airline companies started to make as many flights as they wanted. In 2017, Samsun Carsamba Airport was closed for 3 months due to runway maintenance works.
