Brief history of Odessa Airport

Odessa International Airport made its first passenger flight in 1924. However, it actually dates back to 1908, when entrepreneur and aviation amateur Arthur Anatra bought a plot of land on a steppe near Odessa and set up a repair and assembly shop.

In 1924, the airport area began to be used for training flights. During these training flights, landings and take-offs began to take place within normal flights on the runways. With the landing of the first passenger plane on May 25, 1924, the history of the airport began. Despite the growth of the airport, its official registration became official in 1961 with the construction of a 2800-meter runway, a platform and a terminal building on the airport’s territory.

The airport became one of the largest airports in Ukraine with its increasing traffic, and in 2007, construction work at the airport including the expansion of the main runway was started. After the runway expansion works, land expansion works were started for the new terminal building in 2012. The construction of the new terminal is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013. However, due to heavy delays, it was opened to arrivals on April 15, 2017.

Within the scope of the airport gradual expansion program, land expansion works were started again in 2021, but the works were stopped when 5.000-8.000 skeletons found in the region and believed to be victims of the Holodomor were found.
