Hosea Kutako International Airport is Namibia’s main international airport serving the capital city of Windhoek. Located 45 km east of the city, it is Namibia’s largest airport with international connections. The port is primarily used for private jet flights. It was named J.G. Strijdom Airport from its foundation in 1965 until Namibia’s independence in 1990. The airport was renamed in 1990 in honor of the Namibian national hero Hosea Kutako.
The airport is the hub of the airline Air Namibia and is operated by the Namibian Civil Government.

Hosea Kutako Airport history
The airport was opened in 1965 under South African rule and was later named J.G. Strijdom Airport in honor of the Nationalist Prime Minister of South Africa. In 1990, after independence, it was renamed Hosea Kutako International Airport.
There are approximately 46 direct flights per week between Hosea Kutako International Airport and O. R. Tambo International Airport. Menzies Aviation, an international company registered in the UK, was appointed as the ground handling operator at Hosea Kutako International Airport in November 2013. Condor Airlines launched flights between Frankfurt and Windhoek from November 2014. From 2016, Qatar Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines started flying to Windhoek. Eurowings, Lufthansa’s low-cost subsidiary, started a bi-weekly service from Cologne/Bonn in July 2017. Eurowings Discover has launched daily flights to the Namibian capital since July 2022, as well as daily double flights 3 times a week, including flights to and from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Mbombela in South Africa.
South African Airways relaunched its post-Covid operation between Johannesburg and Windhoek in December 2022 with daily double flights. In October 2022, FlySafair successfully negotiated a new route between Cape Town International Airport and Windhoek, while an application for a Johannesburg-Windhoek route is still pending approval.

Public buses run from Windhoek Hosea Kutako Airport to Windhoek city center. Buses do not have a timetable, they run according to flight schedules. There are taxis serving 24/7 at the port exit. There are also offices of different private car rental companies inside the airport.
