Brief history of Mykonos Airport

The importance of Mykonos island was realized in the early 1960s when the town of Mykonos became the center of the hippie movement. Thousands of tourists flocked to this beautiful place in search of peace, and with the population increase, the Greek government of the time began to look for ways to facilitate access to the island. Extensive investments were made for the modernization of the airport, which was in the region at that time but was idle due to geopolitical reasons. The aerodrome became operational for the first time in June 1971.

Although there was not much intensity in the years when it was founded, many renovations were made in the airport as Mykonos became a tourism paradise in the following years. The aerodrome got its real breakthrough in December 2015, with the signing of the agreement between the Fraport AG / Copelouzos Group joint venture and the state privatization fund for the privatization of Mykonos International Airport and Greece’s 13 other regional airports.
