The airport serves the national and international air traffic of the island, nearby cities and the region. The airport was named after Juan Manuel Gálvez (1889-1972), former president of the Republic of Honduras from 1949 to 1952. The airport was previously known as Roatán International Airport.

Although the airport has been in operation since the 1960s, the international terminal was designated in 1993 and first opened in 1995. Remodeled by a Spanish consortium, the airport today hosts both commercial and private traffic, as well as international and domestic flights. The number of flights in and out of the port increases every year as Roatan is fast becoming one of the most visited islands in the entire Caribbean. The airport is managed by InterAirports, S.A.
