History of Dubrovnik Airport

The Yugoslav airline company Aeroput first started using a seaplane station in Dubrovnik to provide flights to the city in 1936. This route connected Dubrovnik to the national capital Belgrade via Sarajevo. Following the increase in flights, a route to Zagreb was opened the following year. In 1938, with the introduction of Aeroput’s regular flights to Vienna, Brno and Prague, with stops in Sarajevo and Zagreb, and also the introduction of a regular flight between Belgrade and Tirana, Dubrovnik experienced a significant increase in air traffic. The city was first served by Gruda Aerodrome, which was opened to commercial traffic in 1936 and is used only in summer. However, in the early 1940s, Aeroput operations were suspended due to World War II.

The current Dubrovnik Airport was opened in 1962. In 1987, the busiest year for Yugoslav aviation, the airport broke its own record by hosting 835.818 passengers on international flights and 586.742 passengers on domestic flights. Following the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the airport exceeded the one million passenger limit in 2005.

Today, Dubrovnik has the most modern passenger terminal in the country. A new terminal was built in place of the old airport building, which was demolished in 1962. The price tag of the project is seventy million Euros and it was financed by a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. A new 13.700 square meter terminal was opened in May 2010. Dubrovnik Airport has the capacity to carry two million passengers per year.
