History of Maun Airport
The first air service started in the 1930s, using a landing strip on what is today Maun’s main street. The runway was later moved away from the city center to the airport’s present location.
The earliest known flights over the Okavango took place in July 1925 and were part of a survey of the rivers in the area using airplanes based at Livingstone. Two Airco D.H. 9 aircraft, numbers 142 and 144 of the then South African Union Defense Force, piloted by Captain C.W. Meredith and Lieutenant L. Tasker, were used.
Airlink started direct flights between Cape Town and Maun from March 2016. In October 2016, Air Namibia suspended its scheduled flights to Maun Airport. In May 2018, government officials confirmed their commitment to renovate and upgrade the existing airport building.

Maun airport transportation details
Taxis are the most reliable way to reach the city center in the port, where there are limited transportation routes from the airport to the city center and public transportation operates irregularly. Since taxis do not have taximeters, it may be necessary to bargain from the beginning and the drivers may not speak English well enough. There are also buses to the city center, but bus departure times vary and the journey can be quite uncomfortable due to overcrowding.
