Brief history of Ankara Esenboga Airport

Following the realization of the first civil flights in Turkey in 1933, civil aviation activities started to gain momentum throughout the country. In the first years, Güvercinlik Airport started to be used for flights. With Turkey’s signing of the Chicago Civil Aviation Convention in 1944, the construction of two international airports in Ankara and Istanbul came to the fore.

The Ministry of Public Works authorized the American Westinghouse – IG White companies for the construction of the airports. Authorized companies completed the construction of Esenboga Airport, which was started in 1951, in 1955. Between 1960 and 1970, development work was carried out throughout the airport. Repair shops, administrative buildings, warehouses and aircraft hangars were added to the airport as part of the development.

Due to the increasing traffic in the early 80s, the domestic terminal was separated and a new building was built and started operating in 1984. A new runway was added to the aerodrome in 85. During the 90s, the airport development works continued without slowing down. It was commissioned in 1994 as part of the international charter terminal renovation works. In the same year, buildings such as a new technical block and tower, fire station and treatment plant were opened.

Although the renovation works continued until the beginning of the 2000s, the airport started to become inadequate in the face of increasing traffic. On January 23, 2004, a tender was opened for the modernization of the airport and TAV won the tender with an operational period of 15 years and 8 months. The new terminal building, which is expected to be completed in 2007, was completed one year ahead of the planned date and opened on 16 October 2006. After the successful completion of the modernization works, the airport was determined as a possible emergency landing site in NASA’s space shuttle program in 2010.
