History of Queen Alia International Airport

Queen Alia International Airport was built in 1983 in response to the increasing airport traffic needs that Amman Civil Airport could not meet. At the time, passenger traffic was growing at an above international average rate, growing 25-30% annually and putting significant pressure on airport facilities despite continued expansion and development.

The Jordanian Ministry of Transport has started work on the construction of a new international airport with sufficient capacity to meet demand for the foreseeable future. In 2007, the Jordanian Government launched a tender to operate and manage the airport under a 25-year concession agreement. The open tender was awarded to Airport International Group (AIG). AIG invested 750 million USD for a new terminal building and modernization.

The new airport, which was opened by King Abdullah II on March 14, 2013, was officially put into service. On January 20, 2014, AIG launched the second phase of the port expansion with a total cost of over 100 million USD. In 2016, the second expansion phase was completed. The new airport has increased annual passenger traffic capacity to 12 million, supporting Jordan’s national tourism strategy to serve as a regional transit hub for leisure and business travel.

On March 14, 2020, it was announced by the Ministry of Health of Jordan that all round-trip flights to and from the Kingdom will be suspended from Tuesday, March 17, 2020, until further notice, excluding commercial freight traffic. The port re-opened for commercial flights on September 8, 2020, after 6 months of closure.

Amman’s most famous wine house, JR The Wine Experience, CLSTR, which attracts attention with its dance performances, and Paloma Rooftop Amman, which is always full due to its affordable prices, can be counted among other places.

Transportation to Amman city center

The Sariyah shuttle buses, which run every 30 minutes between Amman and the aerodrome, are one of the easiest ways to reach the city centre. It takes approximately 25 minutes to reach the city center by taxis waiting outside the port. Since taxis do not have a taximeter, it is necessary to bargain.

There are offices of car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Europcar and Sixt at the airport. Some car rental companies also provide chauffeurs. The reason for this is that tourists experience different difficulties due to the fact that the traffic rules are not followed much throughout the country.
