La Aurora International Airport is an airport serving Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, and is also used for private jet flights. It is located 6.4 km south of the centre of Guatemala City and 25 km from Antigua Guatemala. It is managed by the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil.
La Aurora International Airport is Guatemala’s primary airport. The airport has undergone a major modernisation and expansion in recent years. The airport can now accept more flights and larger aircraft. It offers passengers a high standard of facilities. The old terminal has been renovated in accordance with its original design. It was partially demolished and extended with a new glass designed concourse and can now accommodate up to twenty-two aircraft. The major project was completed in December 2008. The airport currently has two terminal buildings, Central and North.
La Aurora International Airport is the fourth busiest airport in Central America in terms of passenger traffic, surpassed only by Tocumen International Airport in Panama, Juan Santamaría International Airport in Costa Rica and Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport in El Salvador.

La Aurora Airport history
During World War II, the airfield was used by the Sixth Air Force of the United States Army Air Corps, which defended the Central American coastline against submarines of the Axis powers. The first American personnel began arriving in December 1941; the airfield was upgraded and expanded by the United States’ 805th Engineer Aviation Battalion in early 1942. Detachments at the airfield operated intermittently from 1942 to 1944 at San Jose Airport, San José, Costa Rica and Puerto San José, Guatemala. After the war ended, a small number of Americans remained at the airfield to fulfil training missions with the Guatemalan Air Force and also to operate a meteorological station (MATS 6th Squadron). Following the death of Colonel Francisco Xavier Arana on 18 July 1949, United States personnel were restricted from entering the base during the Guatemalan revolution. Some artillery shells fell on the base during the violence. The facility was closed on 28 July 1949 and turned over to Guatemalan authorities.
In October 2004, the Spanish airline Iberia began non-stop service to Madrid with Airbus A340s. The new route resulted from the airline’s decision to close the Miami hub from which flights to Guatemala City were operated.
The airport was closed for six months in 2020, from March to September, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
