History of Nice Côte d’Azur Airport

The history of the Côte d’Azur dates back to 1910, when it attracted great attention to air shows. The aerodrome, which was used for air shows for 8 years, started to increase in importance with the start of mail flights between Nice and Corsica in 1918. Nice Cote d’Azur Airport became a state airport in 1937 after being operated privately until the late 1920s.

Like most strategic airports, Côte d’Azur Airport was used as a military runway in both World Wars. After the hard surface runways were put into service after the war, the airport’s value in the region increased. By 1960, more than one million passengers a year were using the airport. At the end of the 60s, improvements were made at the airport in order to better serve the increasing number of tourists and for private jets to land.

By 1978, it was necessary to build a second runway to meet the intensity. In order to build the 2nd runway, the sea was filled and the 2nd runway was built here. The second terminal building was built in 1987 in the Côte d’Azur, which has become one of the most important ports in the region, thus increasing the capacity of the port by 8 million visitors per year.

During the 90s, minor improvements were made at the ports, apart from major constructions. Continuing its development throughout the year 2000, the airport hosted more than 13 million people in 2017.
