History of Hamburg Airport from World War I to the present

The airport was opened in January 1911, with private financing by Hamburger Luftschiffhallen GmbH (HLG). The airport is the world’s oldest still operating international airport and the second oldest airport in the country after Tempelhof Airport. The airport has been used mostly as a military base since its establishment and especially served as a zeppelin hangar during the World War I.

During World War II, the airport was given its name and was used extensively as a preparation area in the Berlin Airlift in 1948. Discussions began in the 1960s with the aim of relocating the airport to Heidmoor, near Kaltenkirchen. Reasons cited included limited expansion possibilities, capacity constraints from crossing runways, and noise. As a result of the new regulations regarding noise, this project was abandoned.

At the beginning of the 80s, flights to America from the port began intensively. Although some American flights were suspended towards the end of the 80s, flights to Asia and Africa were started via the port. These flights could not be sustained steadily and the port went into a decline.

A comprehensive modernization process was initiated at the airport, whose number of passengers decreased with the 90s. Named HAM21, the plan included a new 500 m pier extension, a new terminal (Terminal 1), and the Airport Plaza between Terminals 1 and 2, which includes a consolidated security area. Most of the renovation works were completed towards the end of the 90s.

In the 2000s, the renewed airport started to expand its flight network. On November 10, 2016, the name of the airport was changed to Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport. In October 2016, Air Berlin announced the closure of maintenance facilities at the airport due to cost reduction and restructuring measures.

Hamburg Airport recorded a consistently high level of passenger numbers in 2019. At the same time, ongoing investments in infrastructure as well as environmental and noise protection left their mark on this year.
